How to create reels for Instagram in 5 easy steps

The popularity of Instagram reels is growing exponentially. In just three years, Instagram Reels has become the must-have tool for brands looking to reach almost every demographic. Even small accounts are seeing an increase in engagement when they use Reels.

If you are new to the world of Reels, relax. They are just about as easy to post on the social media site as an image or text. In fact, you can do it in five steps.

Step One – Concept Design

The Reel is only as good as the concept. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Just decide the purpose of the Reel and how you can get there quickly. Reels are short-form videos, so plan on something 90 seconds or less.

Also, make sure the concept fits the brand. It makes sense if you sell shoes and want a video of someone dancing in them. If you sell shoes and create a video about gardening, that makes less sense.

Some types of reels people create include:

  • Brand or personal introductions
  • Product Promotions
  • Informative tips
  • Fashion trends
  • Fun stuff that will engage your audience, like dancing

Reels can be a series of clips, one short video, or something you upload.

Step Two – Create the Video

There are a couple of ways to shoot the video using the Instagram app and a quality portable device like a smartphone, such as:

  • Open the app on your smartphone and tap on the Reels icon at the bottom of the screen. It is the third icon from either side and has a plus sign.
  • With the Reels tab open, tap the camera at the top and start recording.
  • If you want a way to film hands-free, you can use the timer on the left side of the screen. First, position the camera, then tap on the timer. It will give you a countdown before starting to record.

You can also access Reels by tapping the plus icon at the top of the screen to open the post tab. Move to the bottom of the post tab screen and tap on Reels. You can add a prerecorded video from your camera roll, as well.

Step 3 – Edit Your Video

Once you are done recording, tap the Next button on the bottom of the screen. This will give you the option to edit your clip and preview it. You can add stickers, draw on the clips or type text onto them.

You can also add music by tapping the audio icon and picking a song.

Step 4 – Share Your Reel

When you complete your edits, just tap the Share to Reels button. You have the option to tag others on the Reel and invite them to collaborate with you. Just tap “Tag People" on the options list. This invites them to collaborate. Once they accept, they will be shown as one of the video authors.

Step 5 – Market Your Reel

One of the best ways to do this is to share it on Facebook. Before hitting the Share button, tap Recommend on Facebook. Once you make all the choices you want, tap on Share and you are done.
